Whitney Houston and Dana Bash
Whitney Elizabeth Houston was born to a musical family on 9 August 1963, in Newark New Jersey the daughter of gospel superstar Cissy Houston (nee Emily Lee Drinkard) and John Russell Houston Jr. as well as a cousin of the singing sensation Dionne Warwick. In Newark Whitney started singing with the church choir in the early years of her childhood. When she was 15 years old, she joined her mother in singing background vocals on Chaka's smash Im Every Woman from 1978. In the year 1981, she was a model, and was featured on the Seventeen Cover. Also, she provided backing vocals to Lou Rawls and Jermaine. Her vocals with the band from New York Material have attracted record companies of all sizes which included Arista. She signed with Arista in 1983 and was a part of the company for the remainder of her career. In 1985, the debut of Whitney Houston became the top-selling debut album ever. The album All My Love was released in 1985 and became a number one hit. The album was sold out of 3 million copies in its initial season in the US and then went on to make 25 million copies worldwide, earning her the first of her six Grammys. The 1987 follow-up album Whitney featuring the hit songs Where Do Broken Hearts Go and I Wanna Dance With Somebody built on her success but it was 1992's film The Bodyguard (1992) that sealed her place as one of the most successful artists ever. Although the film was not very well received, nor did her performance, the soundtrack of her Dolly Parton version I Will Always Love You reached the top of both the singles and album charts in America for a period of time. The album sold over 44 million copies. When she gave birth to her daughter Bobbi, Brown married Bobby Brown of the ex-New Edition group. Around this time her use of drugs was well-documented and she was able to use it regularly until 1996.
